As most of you know Angela and I were working this summer in Keystone, SD at a campground "Spokane Creek Cabins and RV Park" (remember that name) and they also own a T-Shirt shop in downtown Keystone called Iron Mountain Road.
I started in maintenance and Angela in housekeeping. They one day the owner ask me if I want to work in the Keystone store. I said that would be great.
Well I started working down there no set days but shared days and nights with another worker. Well another work camper couple came in a few weeks ago and had been working there for the last 3 years. But they only work July and August. Ok you up with me so far?
Well the owner wanted to put the new lady down at the Keystone store and put the lady I worked with back at the campground. Ok fine..right?
Well come to find out the new lady she has glaucoma and can't drive at night. Ok fine put the lady that can see back down there and put new lady in the campground store right...not
I was told I was going to work (1) 11 hour day and 4 days 3pm to 8:30pm and have split days off so the new lady could drive down and work days and she did not have to work a 11 hour day.
Well I tried to explain to them that it was not fair for me to have to always work those hours because Angela worked 8am to 3pm and we would never see each other.
Well the owner leading with his iron fist told me if I did not like it, I could leave.
Well we did take his advise and left Monday and we got back to Kansas City today Tuesday and are staying at Weston Bend State Park. None of the family knows we are here we are going to surprise them.
They don't read my blog so no worry.
Well that's my story and I'm sticking to it.. Good Night
p.s. Don't forget that name if your a work camper.

Sorry about that Kenny! It looked like a nice place to work. I think some of these campground owners take advantage of work campers and I am glad that you didn't put up with it. I am sure you will find something better somewhere else.
Now you can enjoy some family time instead!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. It seems we just missed you. Steve and I along with Rudee and Phil from Working Rvers stopped by on Monday to see you and were told you were gone. If you liked the area, you should check out working at Crazy Horse. We've enjoyed our time here. Having wheels is a good thing! Take care.
I think that most work camper positions are underpaid. You're better off paying the monthly rate for a site and finding real work that is enough to pay for your site. In fact, you would probably come out ahead of the game. I hope you were also making a wage on top of your free site. Seems that you were working a lot of hours.

I hear so many horror stories from work campers. Thinking I will stick to gate guarding when wanting to make a bit extra for special travels. (Not that gate guarding can't have a few issues too!)
So sorry to hear about your experience but we would have been out of there also. I'm so thankful that we don't need to do any workcamping. It would just cut into Jim's fishing time too much. lol Have good times with your family.
Gosh we know that feeling way too well...thank goodness you could afford to move on! Some of these places really put people in a bind by saying one thing and doing another after you have driven many miles to get to their location. Hope you enjoyed the sites while you were there.
We will be leaving Maine in just a few weeks now and will not see all we had planned but such is life!
Good luck in your future endeavors...we will be working the Kansas State Fair in September...anywhere near you guys?
Glad you didn't take his ....
sorry about your experience and even more sorry we missed meeting up with you guys. I totally understand your leaving, we got burned on our first (and only) campground job and it left a really bad taste in our mouths. We may try campgrounds again someday but still very cautious, when will these owners/mangers learn that both parties have to be flexible and respectful it can't just be a one way street on the work campers part.
I am so sorry this situation happened to you guys!! I would have left too!!! You just have to treat people right and you weren't being treated right. Unfortunately this type of thing happens all too often.
Have fun with your surprise!! :-)
The upside is great, KC BBQ sooner than you would have. For that we are jealous since no KC BBQ for us until next April.
So sorry to hear of the bad experience. Maybe we can connect since you are back in the state.
Awwww, what the Heck..It was time to go home and hug that family anyway..Things happen for reasons, I believe!
