Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Cabernet in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!"

Kicked Out Of Custer State Park

We got to Custer State Park late afternoon Tuesday. We had no reservation and could not fine any parking spot for us except in a campground with no hook ups it was getting late so we took it for one night. We had already traveled over 300 miles that day.

Our spot for the night in Custer state park.

Custer is not set up for big rigs as far as we could see. The truck got a good work out pulling some of the hills.

After being kicked out of Custer Wednesday because of a miner detail of no reservation we found a park down at the bottom of the big hill. Not as pretty as being in the park but full hook ups and for $92 for 5 days not to bad.

After we got set up we went to the town of Custer to check it out.

Had lunch at a great little hamburger place I had a buffalo burger witch was good Angela not wanting to try anything new had a regular burger. this was a mural on the side of the building.

After lunch we headed over to Hill City to look around. And of course Angela found someone to talk to.

Angela's new man!!

Didn't  see much in Hill City of interest so we headed home via the Needles Highway wow what a ride.

I tried to load a video I took of a tour bus coming thru the tunnel but couldn’t get it to load what a site to see. Here are some pictures I found of the highway.

the tour bus videos on You Tube are a riot. . .and trust me. . .they are just as funny from inside the bus. We had an awesome driver and guide. . .now that we have a much smaller vehicle, would enjoy driving it though. . .and be able to enjoy all the pull outs and vistas. . .

I'm glad you found an alternative place to camp - it sounds like a good deal for five nights.

Buffalo burgers are yummy! I actually prefer them to regular burgers. At my local Wal*Mart they have Kiva buffalo burgers in the frozen section.

I remember that tunnel on the Needles Hiway very well. I had to pull our side mirrors in on our truck just to get through. I sure wouldn't want to try driving a bus through there.

When there I had the Buffalo meatloaf and Len a buffalo rib eye. Delis!

We drove our dually all of Needles Highway. That one tunnel is 8'4" wide, our dually is 8'. TIGHT. We met a tour bus coming up when we were going down. Would have loved to have seen it go through that tunnel.

To Phyllis....a 8'4" tunnel? Holy crap, I would never get through there. How would a tour bus make it? With my mirrors blow'n in the wind, I'm 119" wide.

think i'll skip it. the hsndle on my side of truck would probably come off from me pulling on it so much. i am not a good passenger in any mountains. We had bison burgers on menu at restaurant for a long time. they are much leaner than reg hamburger but guess most people like their beef

My fondest memory of Custer State Park was the begging burros! My son and I took a car trip through that area years ago. The burros stuck their heads right inside our car and ate our Doritos! It was great fun.

We stayed in the Legion Lake Campground last fall but that is one park you really need a reservation in if you want to stay in the park. Luckily there are a lot of other private parks nearby, glad you found one. We really loved that area.
